Invitation and Announcement
DATE/TOTAL TIME/LOCATION:
Saturday, November 18, 2006
3 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Rio Hondo College (Registration will be at A219)
AWARDS: Certificates will be presented to all speakers who complete all their rounds. The top speakers will receive trophies. Prize announcements will be announced at the tournament or as soon as possible. Most of the time, we give extra awards.
ELIGIBILITY: All enrolled students at Rio Hondo College who have not competed in more than two speech tournaments within the last year are automatically eligible to compete. High School students with no extensive forensics experience are eligible with director permission. Students who are enrolled in 2-3 units of forensics speech lab can enter two events (double enter). Otherwise, a student speaker can sign up for one event only. Follow the guidelines for the speeches (detailed in the “summary of events” section). Generally, all experienced forensics competitors with more than two competitions should judge and help coordinate this event.
ENTRY: Instructors can enter 2 students per course section. Instructors need to provide one judge for
3 - 5 entries. And, at least a second judge for entering 6-10 students. Judges must:
Ten students is the maximum amount of entries for any one instructor due to room limitations. Entries are on first-come-first-serve basis. Entry forms must be completed and submitted to Gil Puga's faculty box (in communication department) or through email gpuga@riohondo.edu no later than Thursday, November 16 at 10:30 p.m. Because of the limitations of rooms and judges it is recommended that you turn in your entry as soon as possible. Entries may be limited based on room reservations, judge availability, and student qualification. Emailed entries should request a reply to confirm entry. If you get no reply by Friday at 5 pm, November 17—your emailed entry was not received, entry status can be verified by email at gpuga@riohondo.edu or by calling 562-822-7842. No late adds will be accepted.
JUDGES: Student Judging: The forensics team coaching staff will train students on the considerations and procedures for giving timely feedback. All student judges must complete one of the student judging orientation training meetings. After completing the training, student judges will be placed in a judging pool and the tournament director and staff will have them judge where appropriate. Student judges will be selected their professors. The orientation training takes place on two optional separate times:
Public Speaking instructors are encouraged to participate in this event. Student judges, community members, forensics speech and debate team members will also serve as judges. The Forensics Speech and Debate Team will coordinate and judge. Please email gpuga@riohondo.edu by Sunday December 4th if you are interested in judging. First come, first serve for judging pools. We may limit amount of judges if we have met our maximum. Flex credit is available. Judges should review the “Judging: instructions and guidelines” sheet to be provided the day of the tournament or at the orientation training. Judges should bring a stop watch and a pen. All judges are encouraged to attend the judge training session—new judges are particularly encouraged. A certificate of judge orientation completion will be given to judges completing the training session.
EXTRA CREDIT: Attendance forms will be available at the tournament registration table for students attending for extra credit. Extra Credit is up to the discretion of the instructor. I want to discourage using this forum for make-up speeches. Rather, use it as a way to give those exceptionally talented students that extra challenge. Moreover, student speech competitors who are participating out of his/her own intrinsic motivation are more likely to gain from this experience.
SPEAKER PROFESSIONALISM:
Generally, students will be rated according to forensics speech standards. Speaker's are encouraged to convey a professional image. It is advised that a speaker dress as though he/she were at a professional interview. Please avoid: hats, tongue rings, or other items that may interfere with your articulation and/or ability to communicate nonverbally (i.e., eye contact). A Rio Hondo public speaking teacher can give you suggestions regarding developing speaker ethos (credibility). Podiums and visual aid stands are difficult to guarantee. Generally, podium use is discouraged. Memorized well prepared speeches are encouraged.
